3 Reasons making New Year's Resolutions are Pointless
Updated: Sep 14, 2020
If you're reading this on January 1st 2020, let me first say thank you for tuning into my blog. Amongst the host of possible reasons you might be here today, let me just hope that somewhere embedded in your New Year's Resolutions there wasn't "read a blog".However, if it is my misfortune that this is your sole reason for being here today, don't feel offended by what I'm about to say.
New Year's Resolutions are a waste of time. A little harsh I know, but someone had to say it. The idea of making New Year's Resolutions is an ideology that has been indoctrinated in our culture for God knows how long but to what end? If you're anything like the average person, each year you make a New Year's Resolution, you start of strong in January, by February you have began to lose your way and by the end of the year you've reverted back to your old routines and nothing's changed.
So why am I calling you out on your bluff now? well it's that time of year again, the beginning of a new season a "new year" for want of a better word and I know many of us are gearing up to create more unfulfilled New Year's Resolutions. So do yourself a favour and listen carefully to the advice I am about to give.
For starters, there is no crime in not having a New Year's Resolution, let that sink in it for a minute. I get it, people are judgy, they hate hearing that you don't have a New Years Resolution because you dared to act outside of societal norms, but who cares about what people think? Most people who actually do have resolutions have been significantly strong armed by the fear of standing out, but why even bother trying to fit in, when you were clearly born to stand out.
Okay so I'm sure thus far I have given off the impression that I hate New Year's Resolutions and I despise all who actually make them. Let's be clear I don't despise anyone for the choices you make, in theory I actually think the idea of having a New Year's Resolution is pretty decent. My problems with them however include the following:
1) I've never really subscribed to the wait until the start of the new year to make a change ideology
Why you ask? simple; People generally make resolutions regarding things in their life they want to change, but wait months or in some cases, a whole year to change it.
Please make it, make sense. If you want to change things so badly why wait until the beginning of the New Year?
2) The undocumented resolutions just don't work for me.
A lot of people claim that they've made New Year's Resolutions but have not actually documented them. Huh? What do you mean you haven't documented it? Listen, while many may have a difference of opinion on this, it is my belief that if you don't document something you intend to do, you run the risks of forgetting about the task. I mean come on, we're humans it's normal to forget things. So why would you, being fully wary of that fact, still decide not to document your resolution?
3) As for as I am concerned, NO Documentation means NO Accountability
If you never wrote your resolution down and nobody knows you were suppose to do it,
who's gonna hold you accountable for your completion or lack thereof of the task? To further illustrate my point, I'm going to share a real life experience of mine. A blog is something I have always wanted to do, but I have never documented it as something I wanted to do and until recently, I didn't tell anyone that it was something I had in mind to do. The result? it never got done. Yet, over the past Christmas holidays I mentioned to a friend that I wanted to start a blog and because I had publicized this information and I could be held accountable for not completing this task, voila!!! we have a blog :).
Okay, so you've been reading attentively but you miss the point about how making or not making New Year's Resolutions links to my point of surviving life as a 20 something... Here's the deal, we're getting older and I also want us to start becoming wiser, so here's my two cents. Want to make a change in your life go ahead, but promise me you will make attainable goals that can be measured and are time sensitive. You don't have to wait until the beginning of a New Year to make your change and for the love of God, tell somebody about your goal so that you can be held accountable for its beginning and completion.
